International commission on stratigraphy

Abstract. The Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) of the Subcommission of Quaternary Stratigraphy of the International Commission on Stratigraphy is moving toward recommending that the start of a formally designated ‘Anthropocene’ epoch be placed in the middle-to-late 1900s. This article summarizes three objections to this possible action..

The Subcommission on Neogene Stratigraphy (SNS) is part of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The SNS was founded in 1971 in Lyon - during the IV congress on Mediterranean Neogene Stratigraphy - by Professor Menner, chairman of the ICS. The proposal was submitted to the International Commission on Stratigraphy and was accepted by the ICS bureau at the meeting in Urbino, Italy, mid-June 2002 and passed for the final ratification. The geologic time scale is the stratigraphic history of the Earth.Stratigraphy, also called chronostratigraphy is the ordering and analysis of the layers of the Earth (also called strata) based chronological dating techniques and the layers' positions relative to each other.Geologic time begins approximately 4.6 billion years ago, shortly after when the Earth began to form.

The GSSP occurs in a succession of dark gray to black limestones (lime mudstones, or calcimicrites and calcisiltites) and fine-grained argillaceous limestones interbedded with lenses of fossil rich limestone (calcisiltie).
